Q
It is our great pleasure to be able to ask you some questions.First of all, I saw your solo performance in Nagoya Japan. It was definitely awesome experience, it’s just like description of epiphany.

A
Arigato Gozaimas

Her performance in Osaka 2015

Q
I think you might have a reason to play mostly by yourself for this full album. If possible, please tell us why you have made this full album by yourself.

A
I felt it was important to myself to do as much of this album on my own as possible. It was a goal I set for myself and wanted to meet, a big challenge. It felt like the only way I'd really grow into being a new artist.

Q
You played various instruments at live performance. Please tell us the instruments which are used at this recording.

A
Mostly my synthesizers by Roland, some electric guitar and bass, live drums, flutes.

Q
I guess your various collaborations have made your music polished. (Dirty projectors, Animal collective, Flying lotus, Vampire Weekend, Bjork etc.) I am especially interested in the first song on Co La “Moody Coup”. You sang a melody of “Sukiyaki”. Original lyric means “We are all alone, look at the sky and walk, so the tears won’t overflow your heart”. What do you think about this lyric and Japanese culture?

A
The Co La album was completely created by Matt Papich and he asked me to sing the lyrics of Sukiyaki. It was a wonderful experience. To me these lyrics feel like human kind are all trying to attain the same thing in the end, ascension to the cosmos.
There, we can all be together and escape the pain earth holds. Our physical bodies can make us feel alone, we own nothing and no one on earth, but our spirits are together in the sky when we look up. I think these lyrics are Universal.

Q
Your grandfather is from Armenia, I think that your music is blend of European, American, Eastern and many more. Your music will link every place in the globe. Especially, I sometimes feel that your music is similar to Japanese culture, for example, old popular songs or recent video game BGM, even a phrase of “Noh” Japanese art which includes drama, music, and dance. I guess both have same roots which are ancient folk music, modern classical, soul, jazz, progressive rock or new wave. What do you think about this idea?

A
I feel drawn to ancient and traditional cultures, the art and music. I love the extreme simplicity and complexity of the music. What I love about solo Japanese instrument performances is the attention to the space in which the instrument is played. Listening to a solo shakuhachi performance is so powerful for it's transcendental effect and to create so much vibration with one instrument. This is just one example. The art, music, theater, storytelling of all cultures feels very important to me and inspires me. It is a way to strengthen and honor all cultures and their spirituality and union. It honors the people of the culture through ritual acknowledgement of the growth of its people. I suppose that feeling or idea very much inspires me and my music.

Q
Whatever you think, I am sure that Japanese people will love your album. By the way, why were this album’s songs recorded at various places? In a church or a topaz chamber; It’s probably good place for your music. Tell us a significance of a certain space for you.

A
I recorded some in my home in Baltimore and my home in Los Angeles. The Topaz Chamber is my friend Kenny Gilmore's studio, a small cube shaped room. Some of the music was recorded at a church in Los Angeles for spacial effect. The reverb in the rooms were just beautiful. Sonic space is very important for me when recording. All the instruments and their parts are significant to me and need their own space to breathe. Some of this can be achieved in mixing, and some achieved in the literal spaces they were recorded in.

Q
As you say on twitter, we’d just have to try to survive in those so hard societies relying mostly on ourselves, but I believe that your music has power to overcome such a situation. Do you feel and express similar things while you were recording this album?

A
Music has the ability to unite people, but I do feel we have created in our society a deep disconnect from each other as people. Many of us feel alone in a society filled with humans. Ultimately, we rely on ourselves, but our civilization has grown to a point where we rely on larger, outside sources to help us survive.

I feel it is one of the jobs of the musician to consider the people and to unite them. Truly, it is the work of any artist to unite people. I believe everyone has the ability to create and should create to keep the spiritual union between all in the world, and to have an outlet for emotional processing.

Q
Well, Who are the target listeners for 『The Expanding Flower Planet』?

A
Everyone

Q
Please tell me three albums that influenced your sound.

A
CAN - Ege Bamyasi
Alice Coltrane - Monastic Trio
Dorothy Ashby - The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby

I think it is better for the listeners to interpret for themselves. :)

Q
Last question, how do you think the way this world is. Or tell us your ideal way of living. Simple words would be fine. Maybe, does it relate to the album’s artwork or the title“ The Expanding Flower Planet”?

A
The world feels like it is at the edge of a complete shift in the way we live and think. Technology has the ability to heal, unite, teach, and destroy us. The internet is binding our collective consciousness together in a way where we are almost living in two realities, virtual and physical.

Right now, I'm just trying to survive and support myself. My ideal way of living would be to learn how to survive off the land, like growing my own food, survival skills, recycling and reusing products, and helping other people.

It's very difficult to try and achieve all of this in a life time, but I think it is possible. I believe we have all the answers to creating and repairing a beautiful, sustaining world where everyone benefits. It's just the human powers at large that control the distribution of necessities. Mostly, I feel the album title relates to my interpretation of Sukiyaki. Trying to ascend together.
